Things My Father Taught Me:

So...this past weekend my dad came out with my 2nd oldest brother to help him move from Chicago (very very excited to have Mike, Petra, Kaylee, Taylor and soon to be little Ollie out here :D  ).  Anyways, They got to Provo Friday evening and Dad had to leave to go back to VA for another brother's Law School Graduation (many congratz Matt, glad your family survived) by noonish on Saturday.  So, we were lucky enough (since Andrea and Thad are in Washington and Ben...not sure what Ben was doing) to get Dad for breakfast.  Now...my family has lots of strange traditions and quirks and things that we always say/do.  Albert has pointed a lot of these out to me...and I realized that most of these things are "false traditions of my father"...and I've started making a list of them.
-Peanut butter sandwiches: They're magical.  Really they are.  At least...that's what my dad always taught me.  You see, the only sure-fire way for a bad guy to become a good guy is for the main good guy to give the bad guy a peanut butter sandwich.  Even if the bad guy is tricked into eating it, just one bite of that sandwich changes his attitude completely.  It doesn't matter if the good guy is barbie, or batman, or Ollie the super spy kid or one of the super cousins...peanut butter sandwiches help EVERYONE.
-Icy juice:  Any kind of fruit juice is a billion times better when slightly frozen and with frozen bits of the juice floating around in there.
-"K love you bye": Whenever missionary brothers called home at Christmas and on Mother's Day and Dad thought we were taking too long we were told "say 'love you bye!'" Today I was talking on the phone w/ my dad (just checking in and hoping I wasn't interrupting FHE) and as we were saying goodbye (it was dinner time and everyone was at the table) he told everyone to say "I love you bye" to me, even though I only talked to him.  They all did...though someone (one of the girls...probably beth haha) said it delayed...
-Dude Lunch: When I first said those two words together, Albert gave me a very confused look.  Dude lunch is a tradition started...probably because of mom being pregnant and not being able to stand the sight/smell/thought of food long enough to make anything...or just from dad trying to be helpful...probably a combination of both. What is it?  Just a bunch of random stuff (most importantly: cheese, bread, peanut butter, some sort of fruit (usually apples) and a few bags of popcorn) thrown on the table with plates, cups, and a few utensils (occasionally).  To this day, it's still one of my favorite meals. :)
-Captive Audience? : You have to sing oldies in the car...and it has to be at the top of your lungs...ok not always HAS to be at the top of your lungs...but fairly often.
-Eggies: Ramen tastes best with eggs cooked in it.  End of story.
-"Midnight" snacks: They can be given at any time of night and either consist of apple slices and cheese or (if you're older and are staying out of bed and mom is dead asleep) strips of steak meat fried up and boiled eggs or (if you're visiting from college and most of the younger kids are asleep) ice cream. :)  My favorite was always the apple slices and cheese (I used to steal bits from my youngest sister Tiffany when dad brought HER snacks  bahaha)
-Ollie:  Somewhere in the world there is a little once-orphan boy named Ollie (I wanna say he was in India, but that might be Kiplings "Kim") who works for the government and has tons of awesome spy gadgets and often saves the world/country from bad guys.  This is a tradition of TWO generations.  Both my father and grandfather told Ollie stories.  I probably will carry on this tradition.
-Barbie Land:  It exists.  And the door to Barbie land glows and you can hear the barbies calling for help when they need it.
-Everyone wins:  this is a great tradition, though frustrating when you actually DO win or are about to win...
-Polka: at almost every dance that my dad and I are at, if there is enough space (and even if there's only BARELY enough space) we find a song that works as a polka and polka around the outside of the crowd.
-Sticks: it is almost always essential to have a "walking stick" or some kind of stick in your hand when you are going on a hike/walk through the woods.
-Sticks 2: When you have a long thin branch of a tree (usually a pear tree) and the end is sharpened to a point (especially when you plan on using it to roast marshmallows, hot dogs or anything really over a campfire) it is called a "mubumba"...the word came originated from my older brothers and stuck.

There are probably a LOT more that I'm leaving out (which is happening only because I cannot think of any more, but please, if you have more "false traditions" please feel free to comment and add to the list. :)

Pregnant Picture :)

I posted it on facebook, but not everyone who follows has a facebook account.  I'm a little tiny bit bigger now I think...or maybe I just feel bigger than I look...either way, enjoy. :)

Sleep Talk, Crazy Patrons, and the New Ward

So it is a well known fact that I talk in my sleep.  I've expressed adoration, hatred and even threatened people all completely asleep.  I have gotten good enough that I can even pray out-loud and seem fairly conscious (exempt for a few random blessings for the village in How to Train Your Dragon because of the fire troubles they've been having or mixing up some words etc.)  I've had several regular conversations (talking about like how I was feeling etc) at night with Albert that I have absolutely no recollection of.
What isn't very well known is that Albert talks in his sleep.  One night I was waking him up from where he'd fallen asleep on the couch and when I was trying to convince him that he'd be a lot more comfortable in bed he stated "it was a bed...like a bullet that came out of the couch" or something like that.  the next morning I asked him about it and he had no idea what I was talking  about.  A couple nights ago we had a conversation that made a lot more sense.
I was rummaging on our dresser for the tums at about 2:15 am and since the light was off and my contacts weren't in, I really couldn't see at all and so I was making a tiny bit of noise (really not very much)...
Albert:SHHH!!!  Melanie BE QUIET!!!! Stop making so much noise!
Me: I'm not making that much noise.
Albert: Yes you ARE!  now SHHHHH!!!
Me: Albert, you be quiet, you're not even awake.
     Albert: Yes I am!!
Two seconds later he was snoring.
The next morning I asked him about it.
Me:So do you remember yelling for me to be quiet last night?
Albert: I didn't yell at you last night.
...right.

Another well known fact is that I work at the Provo City Public Library.  This morning, I was checking in items from our outside book-drops and found the following note "Dear Library Staff, the annotations, underlinings, and other pencil and ink marks within this book were not made by me, nor would I ever do something so irresponsible to a library book.  Please do not hold me responsible for their existence.  Thank You, Card Holder *********"  While I'm sure the patron meant well, they had taped the note into the book...I feel sorry for the clerk who gets to explain to this patron how irresponsible taping things into books is.
Yet another interesting experience today involved me, a random man who looked kind of old-ish, and a woman with a young son.  While waiting in line (we were short-handed and while I was making a card for someone a line formed and there wasn't anyone to call out to help), this man turned to the woman with her son and started asking her about him, if it was her first, how many she wanted.  I don't remember how many kids she wanted, but he stated that he had 8 children but was working on 10. my first thought was does your wife know?  do you have a wife?  and then I decided to stick with   Great thanks for telling us. but he didnt' stop there...he went on to announce that his grandma had 16 kids and his great grandma had 20 something. Wow...not even my parents are that crazy.  When he got to the front of the line he promptly noticed that I was pregnant (as I can no longer hide it haha).  He then asked me what number I was on.  I was tempted to say thirteen or some crazy nuber...but I didn't.  I told him it was my first and he asked how many kids I wanted "10?  12?  8?" ...hahahahahaha I think Albert would go crazy. "more like 5" to which he replied "well, at least you aren't just wanting this one"  which caused more internal laughter because Albert insists that this is going to be our only child because he doesn't want to put up with me being pregnant again (I swear I'm not THAT bad...usually).
yep.  that's life at the library :)  random people sharing a LOT of information that you don't always need/want to know...like the random under-washed man with a construction helmet under his arm sharing with me that he met a girl 4 days before and proposed to her an hour after knowing her...and that her parents were a little upset at him and that she hadn't told him 'no' yet...wow...
the other part of life at the library is my co-worker Denise making "pregnant woman jokes" and patrons getting really mad at us because of the library policies that we can't change.  And other patrons being shocked that they need to have their library card or photo id to check items out. and other patrons coming over from Orem being shocked that they need to register their card with us because our computers aren't networked with the library in Orem so we don't have their records and that in order to register they have to have photo ID and a proof of address for where they currently live and it has to have THEIR name on it...yep....this all happened today.
Now, not all patrons are horrible like that...random patrons (the old ones mostly) give you candy. and some are very nice and smile and are very happy and make you feel happy that you can work with them and wonder why everyone can't be like them.  and some don't throw complete fits about having a lot of fines because they had 30 books and they kept them all a week and a half overdue and didn't bother trying to renew them. yep. :)  it's patrons like those that make working at the library all worth it...

Now about our new ward.  Because there were so many single people living around BYU they dissolved 2 of the stakes (our old one included) and moved a lot of boundaries around.  Albert and I were lucky enough to still be in a married student ward.  It's not exactly like our old ward, but that's ok because the church is still true there and the members are still happy people who love the Lord and the Spirit is still strong in the meetings.  Our new bishop made me laugh this Sunday when we turned in our new member sheet because he had to switch from "Contreras" to "Melanie" which apparently doesn't transition well when you aren't used to saying it.  But that's ok. :)  (I wonder how confused everyone is going to be when our name officially changes to "Helsing"...haha)  Today, I have been especially fellow shipped by our new ward. My visiting teachers came over and visited (they both seem like very nice and happy people and I'm excited to get to know them better) and taught me and inspired me. :)  Later (I guess about 1/2 an hour ago) there was a knock on our door and when I answered it there was a couple from the ward (the Hoppers I think...the wife is the Relief Society President) with a flyer about a ward activity going on tomorrow night.

so yeah.  life is good.  My dad is currently on his way out here with my brother Michael and his family cuz they're moving eventually to Spanish Fork area (they just found out they're having a little boy YAY!  Johnathan will have yet another little boy cousin near-by) So I get to see them soon which makes me super happy because I haven't seen Michael and crew since my wedding and I haven't seen my dad since February...so it'll be good to catch up. :)  So, more adventures later!

Happiness

There are times when honestly I wonder how the Lord puts up with my stubbornness and my near-sightedness.   All the same, I'm very glad for His patience. :)  After all, without that, I wouldn't have been able to end up with Albert.  And though we have very different backgrounds (i.e. my huge family vs. his medium sized family (which was small for most of his life), my not being spoiled by any aunts or uncles vs. his being the most definite favorite nephew here in the US and thus spoiled "rotten", and my growing up looking at prices first and then at the item vs. Albert's growing up looking at the item and sometimes hardly even glancing at the prices (though honestly, he's a LOT better at getting deals than he was when we first met)) we end up getting along quite well.  Super duper well.
Some of the reasons why I love Albert so much:
-He makes up songs for/about me
-He always sings every single hymn in church.
-He does things like let me get icecream and cake mix to make icecream cake two days after my birthday.
-He insists that I do things for myself (like when I'm supposed to buy myself a present...it has to be something that I would use just for me haha)
-He works very hard at school so that he can get great grades so that he can go to a great medical school so that he can reach his goals and provide for our family.
-He compromises with me (i.e. He let me convince him to at least give Johnathan a middle initial)
-He demands that I go to bed when I'm sick and doesn't really give me a choice about it.
-Even though I sometimes accidentally keep him up at night, he doesn't make me leave bed and he just puts up with it. :)
-He watches nice shows and movies with me late at night so that I don't have bad dreams at night.
-He massages my legs when I get cramps in them in the middle of the night. (he's very, very good about this...so wonderful!)
-He is an amazing cook (seriously...if you've never had his cooking, you should...it's wonderful)
-He likes to show me off and make me feel beautiful.
-He randomly surprises me with chocolate. :)
-He is very cuddly and likes having me close to him (exempt for when I'm burning hot because of my little "bun in the oven")
-He makes me want to be better
-He helps me stand up when I'm tired
-and (last for right now) he loves feeling Johnathan moving and has been very patient with my crazy baby-craziness and he helps me not pile too much stuff on myself for getting ready for the baby at once.
Yeps.  I caught a good one.  and there are so many other things that he does that I didn't put in the above list...but I'm grateful for all of them...he's so good to me...I'm so lucky to have him. :D  yep...I hope our son can be like him. :)

"Birthday, Birthday, Coming to Earth Day..."

"...pink and wrinkled and small!!!!"  love that song...it's been stuck in my head all week...thus Albert officially does NOT love that song hahaha.  So yeah...YAY FOR BIRTHDAYS!
My first thought upon waking up the morning of my birthday and being 21 was "that was a weird dream...why did Albert make me go in that hair salon where they were making people look like cats"...and then "why did they have a karaoke contest?!" and then "why didn't I win?...it's my dream!"  Yep...
I feel like my birthday really started Wednesday with the arrival of my birthday package from my wonderful and amazing parents.  I got a birthday tiara, some blowy noisemaker thingys, confetti, party hats, balloons, cake, some candy, and some trail mix. :)  All that with a birthday card promising the soon arrival of gift cards (one to Jo-Ann and one to Olive Garden (yay!!!)).
Anyways, Thursday morning Albert and I took a pleasant trip to the BYU Student Health Center to get some blood work done concerning his diabetes.  After that, we went up to Tucanos (the Brazilian all-you-can-eat grill) and enjoyed a wonderful lunch (yay free birthday meals!!).  After that we walked a bit of what we ate off going around the little shopping area and enjoying the views of all the interesting goodies there were.  I used my boarder's gift card to buy Albert's father's day present, Tron: Legacy (the new one)(which I gave to him early....partially because we'd started it at a friend's house and hadn't been able to finish it and we both REALLY wanted to find out what happened).  On our way back to the car, Albert bought me some chocolate covered strawberries (one of my very favorite treats).  As we drove home, we stopped by the mall and picked up the necklace Albert had bought me for our wedding (it'd broken in the middle of last year and we just hadn't had time to fix it until a week or so ago)...while we were there he bought me a bracelet to match the necklace. (AND it was on sale so it was also a super lucky buy)
Once we were home, we watched Tron and then Albert went to class.  I got a call from his classmate and friend, Jared's, wife (Britney) and she and I went to watch Albert's friend Melissa's new laberdoodle puppy (she's soooo cute!) and then used my Red Robin birthday coupon to eat.  After that, we went to one of Britney's friend's houses for a knitting party where I learned to crochet the flower headband thingys :)
Amidst all this, I received many wonderful calls from family with wishes of happy birthday and many variations of the birthday song. :)  many thanks to all of you, your love and well wishes are muchly appreciated. :)
After the knitting party (well...Britney was learning to knit something), we met our husbands back at my house and went our separate ways to bed. :)
Overall, it was a very, very wonderful birthday.

As the time draws near...

...and we slowly get everything together for the baby, everything becomes more real...and it's kind of crazy.
Wonderful quote from Albert: "I can't believe in 63 days we're having a baby...a REAL baby...not one of those fake ones we get at the store"
:) Oh I love him.
Updates:
          -31 weeks today
-Johnathan has finally started kicking for Albert.  A few days ago Albert had his arm around me and his hand on my stomach and, almost instantly, Johnathan kicked him.  Early the next morning, Albert had his hand on my stomach over the blanket and Johnathan was trying really hard to kick his hand and get his dad to feel it. YAY!
-Braxton-Hicks contractions have started...so far no pain... which is good.
-I'm sick again.  with another stuffy nose...so far I haven't really been coughing...so I'm hoping that I can keep it just at sniffles
-Somehow whenever any of my co-workers is sick, I catch what they have.  A few weeks ago, Denise was sick with a sore throat and a cold...the next day, I had the same thing.  Last Friday, Janet came to work with no voice and sniffles...by the next day I was sniffing as well.  too bad I can't take anything stronger than calcium (plus sleep) to ward off illness...airborne and echenasia (sp?) are off limits because of the baby...please, if you have any good suggestions for keeping healthy that I haven't listed, please let me know...both albert and I are tired of me getting sick.
-Fortunately, I called my dr. the last time I was sick (two weeks ago) and was told that I can take robetessen (even DM) and any kind of tylonol and even musinex...I don't have a ton of stuff left over from being sick last time, but tomorrow I've scheduled a trip to the store to fix that...
-We finally have a crib!!!! We got it today when we went to Albert's parents' house. :)  (we have wonderful in-laws)
-My birthday and then baby shower are this week...and I don't really know what I want/need...ah well...
-There is officially not a single episode of Hogan's Heroes that I have not seen and/or slept through. Albert watches it a lot...the only reason I'm ok with it is because it is 99% clean and it's funny and he likes it and I usually like it and I can block it out really well... :)
-Albert and I's new favorite date spot is Nickle City in Orem.  we have collected just around 8545 tickets all together...we're going for 30,000 so that we can get the Ipod prize...we're not in a rush to get it...it's just something we're doing for fun.
Fun fact: Today I was frying 2 eggs for Albert, and one of them had a double yolk! I was super excited.
So yep...that's us!
